Saturday 7-11-09 – HEAVY DEFEAT against top team

We played Woodley Saints Lions, who were unbeaten all season. The boys needed to show some battling qualities and some passion. A team huddle before kick-off seemed to get them in the right spirit. However, after 4 mins a long ball over the top of our defence and we were 1-0 down. After 8 mins we had our first attack with J putting a good cross from the left but no-one on end of it. After 13 mins we attacked again and a good ball through from J got to their keeper first. He then kicked downfield and their forward hit a left foot shot across JC for 2-0. We continued to battle but they had a lot of the ball and it took two great saves from JC in 23rd min to keep score down. In 25th min they had a corner which we did not deal with and a shot though the crowd of players in the box made it 3-0. Another corner in the 27th min caused us problems and a toe poke into the top corner made it 4-0.  They had one last attack in the first half but shot over the bar. In the second half we had a lot more possession and continued to battle against a very good set of players, especially their midfield and forwards. After 2 mins Jack W broke down the left and put in a good cross that J got to first but just steered it wide. A minute later and they broke away against run of play to make it 5-0. After 10 mins JW broke again down the left and put in a great cross for AD to finish but keeper parried back to him. AD then squared for J who shot over the bar from penalty spot when should have scored! Another minute later and JW again broke down left and put in a cross-shot that their keeper punched away – our best spell of the game.  For the next 10 mins their number 7 dominated the game. He had a shot over the bar and then a one on one with JC, who produced a great save and Jacko cleared for a corner. After 20 mins number 7 clipped a ball over the top of our defence for them to make it 6-0. We then had another good spell with JW crossing from left but too close to keeper. Then James H broke clear of their defence from half-way line but shot too early and put it wide. A minute from time their number 7 capped a man of the match performance by beating Luke to the ball and then shooting from 20 yards into top corner to make it 7-0. A much improved performance by the lads not reflected in the scoreline, but at least we don’t have to play the top two for a while now!
