Our final game of the season was against Twyford Comets, who were bootom of the league, 2 points behind us and AFC Henley. You could tell from the first 10 minutes that only one team had the desire and application to do all they could to get the three points, and it wasn’t us!! We lost 2-0, which meant that Twyford climbed to third from bottom, and knocked us down to 2nd from bottom. The best chance we had was a free-kick in the second half that James M hit just over the bar. He was rewarded with man of the match for that effort.

It was a disappointing end to a very tough season for the boys, who in reality, were playing a division (or even two) above themselves in terms of ability. 2nd from bottom feels like a small achievement, especially as were bottom for so long. The boys deserved not to come bottom for their spirit and commitment to attend training and matches. There have been very few weeks where we have not had the whole squad (15) turn up for training on Wednesday evenings and the match on saturday mornings.

On behalf of Roger and myself we would like to thank the boys and their parents for their effort and commitment this season, and hope that they use it as a massive learning curve in their football development. Let’s hope for a better season, results wise, in 2010-2011.

On Saturday we played Woodley Hammers Black, who beat us 2-1 last time, and were confident we could get a win against them if we played as we have been over the last few weeks. However, the first 10 minutes were terrible, shocking, awful (and other words unprintable), with the boys clearly still in bed!! We let a sloppy goal in after 30 seconds and then gifted a second goal after 8 minutes. The rest of the first half was not much better. We failed to challenge for any 60-40 balls in our favour, let alone any 50-50’s, apart from Jack E who was as committed as ever, and even went on a mazy run from centre back to try and liven up the team. We couldn’t get a foot on the ball, and when we did it was being sliced off for a throw-in or passed to one of their players. James H was working hard up front on his own when we did get balls forward but not enough quality balls being played. It was very frustrating and disappointing and some harsh words were said at half-time. This seemed to work as we put in a much better second half performance. Jack E was superb at the back, and Jack W started to get more of the ball and cause some problems down the left flank. After 8 minutes of even possession Bradley passed the ball forward to Jack W, who raced down the left flank and put in a great cross that bounced once in the air and James H running in headed it over the keeper into the net. A really good goal which James H thoroughly deserved for his efforts. After that we had a few corners but could not make anything of them, and had to defend a couple ourselves. We looked more assured at the back in the second half with Luke playing well at right back, we just lacked energy to get players forward quickly to cause more problems in the attacking third of the pitch. James H was given man of the match for his goal and great effort and persistence up front, although pushed all the way by Jack E. We now have two games left in which we need one win to get off the bottom of the league.

On Saturday we played Woodley Wanderers, who beat us 4-0 in the first game of the season. This time we hoped to give them a better game, especially after our recent improved performances. They are a strong, physical side with a very quick centre forward, so our boys had to match them physically and not allow any through passes for their forward to run onto. In the first half, kicking uphill on a heavy pitch, we had the better of the possession and carved out a couple of half chances that they cleared away for corners. Halfway through the half James M was put through by Louis but his shot from the edge of the box was saved at his near post by their keeper. Any threats from them were well cleared by Ewan, who was getting in front of the centre forward superbly, and not allowing him any time or space to run into. At half-time we were confident of getting a goal ourselves and winning the game. However, five minutes into the second half a ball played on their right midway in our half should have been cleared by Ollie but their right winger was stronger in the challenge, came away with the ball and rifled a shot across JC and into the far corner for the deciding goal of the game. For the rest of the half we had lots of possession but lacked quality in the final third of the pitch and did not trouble their keeper. A disappointing result, against the team in 4th place, and leaves us having to win our last two games to get off the bottom.

Ewan was given Man of the Match for his superb performance against a very quick and dangerous centre forward. Their Manager actually told Roger that it was the best performance by a defender against his centre forward all season. Well done Ewan!

The performances in the second half of the season have certainly merited us not finishing bottom, and hopefully we can end the season with a couple of wins. The spirit amongst our boys is brilliant considering the season we have had and for that I hope we can end the season on a high.

On Saturday we played the team in 3rd place, Kennett Valley. We knew this would be another tough game against a side in good form lately. The game was very even with little goalmouth action, and only separated by some expert finishing from Kennett Valley and one poor defensive clearance by us. The 4-0 scoreline certainly flattered them. The game started with us on the offensive and we were rewarded with our first corner after 4 minutes, but they cleared easily. Their first attack came in the 7th minute which ended with a goal kick to us – Ollie shepherding the ball out of play well. In the 10th minute some good work from Jack W, who fed a lovely ball through to James H, but he was just offside when clean through on goal. In the 12th minute a cross from their right was miskicked by us, and it went across the goal for an easy tap-in at the far post for their striker. A spell of pressure from them resulted in a corner from a good Jack E clearance. The rest of the half was dominated by the midfield with Charlie C breaking up lots of their attacking play. When they did get past the midfield Ollie P was clearing up, and having a good game at left back. At half-time and only 1-0 down we had every chance to get a result out of this game. However, in the second half they produced some much better attacking play and were stronger amd more determined to win the game than us. We started well and had two corners in the first 3 minutes, both cleared by their defence. In the 6th and 7th minute they had two quick corners in succession from two great covering tackles from Charlie C. However, from the second of those corners the ball came over and was kneed in at the near post by a forward who was not picked up. The only two moments of any note for the rest of the game were two expertly taken goals. The first was a run down the left from the half way line and then a right foot finish in the far corner from the edge of the area giving JC no chance. The 4th and final goal came in the 22nd minute and was a run down the right from their centre forward, who outpaced our defence and hit a great shot from the edge of the box into the top corner, again giving JC no chance. We battled hard for the rest of the half but could not get any attacking play flowing, not enough support to the front player when we had the ball. Charlie C just pipped Ollie P to the man of the match award for his tireless performance in midfield, producing some excellent tackles and headers away. Four games left, and we must try and get a couple of wins to move off the bottom of the table.

On saturday we had a chance to avenge a narrow 3-2 defeat a few weeks ago against AFC Henley, who are also struggling near the bottom of the table. An extremely entertaining game (unless you’re the Purley manager!!) saw us claim our 2nd league victory of the season with a 7-4 win. The report (which I enjoyed writing for once!!) on the game is as follows:

We started very brightly and forced an early corner which found Jack W who shot over the bar. A minute later James M shot just inside the box but it was high and wide. However, after 5 minutes and Henley’s first attack in our half, a miskick on the edge of the area from Jack E fell to their forward who mishit a shot that looped high and over JC to give them the lead. We responded well and after 8 minutes an attack down the left and shot from Jack W was sliced into his own net by one of their defenders. We continued to dominate possession and Louis had a shot well saved before James M went on a run from half way that ended with a shot that keeper again saved. A minute later we took the lead. A great run and cross from Louis ended with a defender kicking the ball into his own net. Jack W can claim the first goal but Louis has no chance of claiming this one – a definite OG! However, a minute later they had equalised. This time AD failed to clear and another lob in the air by a Henley forward sailed over JC and into the net – they should make these goals smaller, definitely not fair on the keepers! We then had a good chance to go ahead but Matt’s shot from a good James M run and cross was pushed behind for a corner. In the 16th minute they took the lead again. This time a run down the right and cross cum shot was slightly deflected in, again giving JC no chance. In the 20th minute Henley had a chance to go 4-2 ahead when Charlie C pushed a forward in the back from a throw-in to give away a penalty. JC proved he was more than a match for Henley by going the right way and saving the penalty. This seemed to jolt us back into action and for the remaining 10 minutes of the half we had all the attacking play but their keeper made some good saves and their defence held firm by clearing a few corners. At half-time the boys were told to cut out the sloppy defending and put their chances away, and they would then have every chance of beating this team. The first 10 minutes of the half saw us looking a lot more secure at the back, more composed, and being first to the ball. We attacked well and Ollie P forced a save from the keeper, and we had a few corners cleared by them. In the 11th minute we got our deserved equaliser. A ball through from James M found James H, who made a great run and slid the ball under the keeper for 3-3. A minute later James M had a left foot shot that was too high. Another James M run forced a corner which Jack W crossed back in from a clearance and it fell to James H who slotted in the corner for his second goal and a 4-3 lead. We should have extended the lead in the 18th minute, with a bit of 6-yard box pinball! First Louis shot straight at keeper, renbounded to Matt, who also shot striaght at keeper. Another chance in the 20th minute fell to James H for his hat-trick but keeper saved well. In the 23rd minute we extended our lead with the goal of the game. The ball dropped to the egde of the box and Jack W smashed a left foot shot in the top corner. Wild celebrations were short-lived 2 minutes later when the referee gave another penalty to them for a “trip/shirt pull” by Ollie P – he actually made a great tackle and clearly won the ball. This gave a chance for some action for JC and he responded superbly by parrying a fiercely hit penalty. Unfortunately the penalty taker reacted quicker than our defenders to the rebound and slotted home to make it 5-4 – game on!! A nervous few minutes followed until the 28th minute when a good ball down the line from Matt found James H, who crossed and Charlie C side-footed in at the near post for 6-4. In the final minute a kick-out by their keeper only reached James H who slid the ball forward for Andrew K to run on to and slot past the keeper for his first ever Purley goal. A 7-4 win was fully deserved, and if we cut-out the sloppy defending and continue to pass and finish like today for the remaining 5 games then we have every chance of moving up the table a few places. Matt Allen was given man of the match for his great efforts on the right side of midfield.

Following our good performance in our last match against the team second in the league (lost 3-1) we now faced an even tougher challenge against the top of the table and cup finalists Woodley Saints Lions. We set the team up in a 4-5-1 formation that was successful in the last match, and the lads responded excellently again, with good organisation and keeping a good shape for most of the game. In the first minute a great run from Jack W and cross fell to Louis who shot wide. In the 4th minute they had their first shot which was headed behind for a corner by Ollie P. In the 6th minute we got our first corner but it was well cleared by their defence. In the next 8 minutes they put us under a lot of pressure resulting in 3 corners, one which was headed clear by James M. The defending was good, but a slight lapse in concentration in the right back area in the 16th minute let them in for the first goal. A long crossfield pass from their right found their left winger in a lot of space and he thundered a left foot shot into the roof of the net, giving JC no chance. In the 20th minute we had our best chance of the game. A good run by Jack W ended with him being fouled just outside the left hand area of the box. Jack W floated the ball into the area and after a few missed clearances, it eventually fell to Jack E on penalty spot but he sliced the ball over the bar. They came back strong for the remainder of the half but their attacks were well thwarted by an excellent display from the midfield, especially Charlie C. In the second half JC made a good save after a few minutes. We then had a spell of good possession, and a good move involving Jack W and Charlie C ended with a free kick to us, but it was cleared away by their defence. In the 9th minute they extended their lead. A cross that should have been cleared by Louis, ended with a shot from the edge of the box that left JC with no chance. In the 15th minute we had our best chance of the half. A good through ball by James M left Bradley a good shooting opportunity just inside their area, but his shot lacked power and was easily saved. For the remainder of the half it was competitive with few attacking opportunities given to either side through good defending all round. A 2-0 defeat against a very good side was another step in the right direction for us, and we need to maintain this level for our remaining 6 fixtures to try and get off the bottom of the league. Jack W was man of the match for his energy, tackling, great runs down the left flank, and good delivery of corners and free kicks.

A really good battling performance on Saturday from our boys against the team placed 2nd in our league, Goring Robins. After losing 11-0 to them last time round and without our regular keeper and James Hewitt it looked a tall order to get anything from this game, especially with us rooted to the bottom of the league with only one win all season. However, the boys were told to match them for effort and commitment for the whole 60 minutes, and make sure at the end Goring knew they’d been in a game. The boys didn’t disappoint. The first 10 minutes were evenly balanced, with us showing a lot of organisationm from our 4-5-1 formation, and getting some good tackles in, with them having one corner which we cleared well. However, in the 10th minute Ollie (our stand-in keeper) drop-kicked out but the ball was returned back into our box and a forward nipped in before Ollie, and toe-poked it past him for the opening goal. The boys then responded brilliantly, and had a good 7-8 minutes of possession, playing some nice football, especially with us kicking uphill. In the 18th minute we got a deserved equaliser. Some good play in the middle of the park from Charlie Collinge ended with him releasing a nice pass into the path of James M just inside the box, and he hit a right foot shot across the keeper into the far corner. We then found ourselves under pressure from Goring for the next few minutes, resulting in an overhead kick from a corner which went over the bar. Just before half-time they had a free-kick just outside the area but the shot was straight at Ollie, who held it well. We then cleared 3 more corners before the half-time whistle through excellent defending, especially from Ewan. The boys needed to match their work-rate and commitment for the second half to stand a chance of producing a shock result, and it nearly happened. However, despite excellent defending, good goalkeeping, there is only so much pressure you can soak up! Goring started the second half really well, and forced a corner in the first minute but it was cleared by Luke, who was having a good game at right back. From the 7th minute to the 22nd we had Ollie to thank for keeping us in the game. In the 10th minute a good shot was parried away for a corner by Ollie, with the corner cleared by Jack E. Two minutes later Ollie made another save from a shot from the edge of our box. In the 14th minute they hit a great shot from distance that hit the bar and was then cleared away by Luke from the rebound. However, in the 22nd minute a cross from the right was headed up into the air by Luke and their tallest player then headed the ball over Ollie and into the net for 2-1. We then had a rare attacking spell and one good break by Jack W was thwarted by a good tackle from their defender. In the 27th minute they scored again. The ball was chipped over our defence and their forward ran onto it and then chipped the advancing Ollie for a good finish. For the last 3 minutes of the half we had our best attacking spell, with Charlie C firing wide and two corners being cleared by them. An entertaining game ended with a 3-1 loss but the boys can be proud of their efforts and the way they played against one of the better teams in the league. Ollie was man of the match for his stand-in (stand-out!) performance in goal, although all the boys played really well. A repeat of this performance for all the remaining games and we could move up the league by a few places.

Back to the league on Saturday against AFC Henley, another team in the bottom three, and a chance to get some points on the board. However, most of the boys only seemed to realise they were on a field playing football about 6 minutes into the game, by which time we were 2-0 down. Some very sloppy play led to them opening the scoring after 1 minute. A shot was parried away by JC but the follow-up was toe-poked past him. We had one break in the next few minutes that James H toe-poked and keeper easily saved. We then conceded a lot of possession and lacked any ball-winning skills. We were being completely out-muscled all over the pitch. It was no surprise that in the sixth minute they made it 2-0. A quick break down the right hand side and a cross into the box left their centre-forward an easy tap-in, as we had no defenders running back with them. After 10 minutes Charlie Arrowsmith started to get on the ball a lot more in centre of the park, and on one attack AD shot but keeper saved. He quickly caught us on the break with his kick away, and it needed JC to push a shot behind for a corner. We got our first corner after 15 minutes but could not make anything of it. Henley continued to be quicker to the ball and got past our players too easily. They forced another corner in 18th minute which was excellently cleared away by Ewan. In the 22nd minute they made it 3-0. A tame shot from edge of box that JC tried to push away for a corner resulted in an easy tap-in for their forward. In the 25th minute we managed (somehow!) to pull a goal back. The keeper kicked the ball out and it fell to CA, who shot back over his head into the empty net. Half-time came and the boys received a rather strong talking to from Roger (the parents said he lost it big-time BUT IT WAS NEEDED they agreed). The second half saw a totally different game (Roger’s team talk/rage DEFINITELY worked), with the boys getting first to the ball, tackling properly and with purpose, and playing some football. After 2 minutes JH was put through but excellently tackled. In the next 13 minutes we forced 5 corners, had shots saved by the keeper or cleared by their defence, and AD had a great shot from egde of box that rattled the far post, but we could not find the net. At the 5th attempt on 15 mins the corner came over and was cleared to penalty spot but our centre back Jack E was there to rifle a shot back into the net for his first ever goal for Purley. Great strike Jack. We then piled on the pressure to try and get the equaliser but could not, and ended the game losing 3-2. We certainly paid for a very poor start to the game, as this game was there for us to win. Good performances again from Ewan and Jack E at the back, and AD in the second half, but man of the match went to Luke H for his effort, tackling and all-round game. We now have tough games coming up against the top two teams so we must play from the off if we are to compete against them.

After seven weeks without a game, only one training session, and missing a couple of players, a lot of excuses could be made for our exit from the last 16 of the U12 Plate Cup at the hands of Woodley Hammers Blues from Division 5. However, there were no excuses from me, as the two teams on the day were very evenly matched and both sets of players gave a lot of effort for little reward. This was, in the main, due to two completely dominant defences, and a lack of quality attacking wise in the final third of the pitch. In the first half the only real chance fell to James Hewitt, who was put through with the keeper coming out to him at edge of box, he tried to shoot over the top of the keeper but pulled it wide of the post (Adebayor showed him how it was done the following day!). James H proved to be our only real threat with his pace and got a lot of the ball but was always well tackled by their two central defenders. At the other end they had half a dozen corners in the first half but only one troubled us, eventually being cleared away to safety from a ricocheted shot from the penalty spot. In the second half there were no real chances, with both defences easily clearing up any attacks from the edge of their boxes. In the second half of extra time the only goal threat was a free kick on the edge of our box that James C in our goal managed to catch just under the crossbar. Any attacking play we had was held up by our forwards drifting offside far too often. With four minutes to go (and me planning my 5 penalty takers??) a through ball was missed for once by our central defenders and their forward toe-poked the ball past James C and into the corner of our net. At least we did not have to endure the torture of penalties, but the game probably should have ended a draw. We certainly need to improve our passing and attacking play to start winning some league games and move up the table. Outstanding performances again from Jack E and Ewan at the back, with Ewan receiving the Man of the Match award.

The first round of the Plate Cup matched us against our Division 4 U12 side – Purley Pirates. This was always going to be a keenly contested match, and it turned out to be one. In a fairly even first half we managed to take the only clear cut chance and be ahead 1-0. In the second half our superior attacking play helped us to sink the Pirates 4-0. The story of the game……..

In the first 20 minutes the game took place in the midfield, with lots of throw-ins and some good defending restricting the strikers from both teams. The first shot came from a Pirates midfielder from outside the box but lacked any power to trouble JC. We got our first corner after 20 mins whcih JM took but no-one in the box to get on the end of it. In 22nd minute we finally broke the deadlock. Ollie got forward from his central defender position but was tackled on edge of box. However, the ball broke kindly to Louis who shot on the turn to make it 1-0. The Pirates quickly attacked us but a good tackle on edge of our box from Ollie and clearance up field found JM, who in turn passed to James H to run clean through on goal but Pirates keeper came out quickly and dived at James H feet to make a great save. In the last few minutes before half-time the Pirates were on top and forced three corners in a row, which were cleared by us. At half-time we told the lads to keep competing, be frist to the ball, and improve the passing and we would get our rewards. They started the second half well and forced a good save from JC low down at his feet. James H started to get a bit more of the ball and run at their defence, although it was well marshalled by an excellent peformance from ”The Tank”. However, James H got free of him in the 7th minute and from the penalty spot shot into the net for 2-0. In the 10th minute another good run from JH and cross into box, saw Louis get to the ball with their keeper, it broke free to Liam who slotted it into the corner for 3-0. A nice bithday present for his 12th birthday! The next 15 minutes produced a lot of midfield play, with Matt, Ewan and Ollie at the back snuffing out any Pirate attacks, leaving JC little to do in goal. Luke and Louis were tackling well in midfield, but we lacked some good passes to the front 2. In the 28th minute a good run from Luke ended with him being fouled just outside the box. JM stepped up and smashed the ball over the wall and into the roof of the net for a classy strike to make it 4-0. A good game ending with a Blues win, but Pirates can be proud of the way they played, especially “The Tank” at the back. Man of the match for Blues was Liam for his goal, hardwork up front, and it was his birthday!
